JUDGE THYSELF

Stand in front of a full length mirror with you hands to your side. Now look at your reflection and notice what is situated midway on the image before you. If you are like most people you will see your belly, your groins and your hands. If you see something else; then I would get a new mirror if I were you.

The center of anything we measure or consider is the place we find balance. If we move from that center point, we lose balance. This is true in nature, and it is true in human nature as well.

The image in the mirror shows us where our center of gravity lies. This center is where all we do, and all we are "gravitates" toward.

The Bible refers to this point as our "lusts," or "feeding our belly." To many of us this is precisely so, in that eating and drinking is all some people think of or care about. These people are often easy to spot in a crowd because they are often a crowd all by themselves.

But there are others who are not as concerned about what they put in their belly as they are in how their belly looks. These people like to display their interest by wearing clothes, or the lack of clothes that show their slender or muscular abs. And this is to be expected as it is natural for us to want to show off that on which we dedicate a great deal of our time.

Not everyone is interested in their belly. Although we all would like to have firm abs and tasty foods, these are not where our "fulcrum" of balance lies. No, some have their center of balance a little lower; the loins.

Sex is a powerful draw to most all of us from puberty onward into old age (I don't know how far, but even at my advanced age I see the waning of it far off). And though many have found the ability to curtail this drive, most of us have not. In fact, there are far too many of us that are not only driven by this passion, but have their entire center of gravity focused on just that. Unfortunately, this drive, unlike those of the belly, have very strong influences on others, often unsuspecting and trusting others who are damaged by our selfish drives.

Still others of us have our center of gravity a little farther behind us, that is, our wallet. Everything we do or desire has to do with our bank account or that which we "possess." It is far to common for such a pursuit to cause one to drive over the interests of others in their attainment of wealth.

Dangling at our side in the same general area of our anatomy is our hands. With these we perform our work, and with these hands we play in other fields of interests. Not many of us have our center of interest focused on our hands themselves (though some certainly do), but rather use them to help us fulfill that which is our center of gravity. Hands can do very mischievous, even wicked things; or hands can accomplish great and wonderful things. And all to often, those same hands find their way to both the wonderful and the wicked.

Although the hands are not of particular interests to us except as tools, they often help create that which is our center of pride. For instance an artist, or a musician may have his or her entire life's purpose focused on their work. Even a doctor or a scientist saving the lives of many can find their work their "Idol."

At the lower end of your extremities stand your feet (Pardon the pun). And though there are commercials on TV which try to persuade you that you should devote all your interests and your money to these slabs of flesh, few of us do. But, like the hands, these are instruments that can convey us to the places where we can fulfill our interests. Our feet can either carry us to hospitals where we may heal the sick, or at least visit the hurting; or these same feet can take us to a bar or a porno shop.

Sitting high on our shoulders (unless we happen to be Ed Sullivan) is our head. Here we have several instruments with which to fulfill our lusts, or to help others.

Our ears are like cups, both in appearance and in function. They can be filled with either foolishness, nonsense and lies; or they can take within themselves the beautiful, the lovely and the satisfying. They can gather the clutter of gossip; or they can empathize with the hurting.

Our eyes are like the ears, channels into the brain through which can be sent the beautiful as well as the ugly. And all too often, it is the ugly and the deceitful of this World that finds its way into both of these channels.

And then we have the mouth which is the instrument we use to evacuate that which we have taken in through all the other ports of entry. What comes in, must go out. If we spend all our time feeding our center of balance, which is, let's say, our abs; it is unlikely we will have much tolerance when someone wants to tell us about their lust unless it happens to be ours as well.

Although the other instruments of our body may place us in dangerous positions, and work to help satisfy our lusts, it is usually our mouth that gets us into the most trouble. The Bible expresses it this way:

1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. 2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. (James 3:)

James Chapter three has much to say about the tongue, and very little of it good.

Also included in that lump on our shoulders is a brain, or at least one should be there somewhere. I for one sometimes wonder if the lump on my shoulders came with a complete set. This brain filters all the input from the other instruments and make a decision according to past practices what it should hold for future use; what it should discard as unimportant or unlikely to be utilized by the body (such as asparagus for a child or pablum for most adults); and what it should make use of immediately. All these decisions are made according to past experiences. In other words, what we do now influences what our brain will accept or reject tomorrow.

We call this process "habit." And like the our automatic functions such as breathing and walking (we can walk because we developed this ability and habit); our habits do what they will, often without our thinking about them. And usually when we do think of them, it is too late and the deed has already been done.

Habits are often difficult to create, and almost impossible to break. Habits like smoking have to be forced, they don't come naturally. Whatever habit you want to have tomorrow, you have to practice today. And the reverse is just as true. If you don't want to develop a habit of what you were doing yesterday, make sure you don't do it today!

Habits make up who you are. Even though you would much rather be someone else, you are who you are because of the choices you have made day by day. If you want to be someone else than who you are, then become that person by your choices you make daily. But expect that old person to continually confront you and taunt you, trying to get you to be who you were. Others may tell you it's the devil tempting you. Don't believe it. It's you who is tempting you. And although you are not to judge others, you are definitely supposed to judge yourself and make corrections to your personality as faults make themselves known to you (Mat 7:1-2). And the more corrections you make, the more will be revealed to you until you wonder how you could have possibly taken on so many bad habits without realizing it. [The how and why of habits is for another study, too extensive to be considered here.]

Habits have a way of taking over your life. An extreme of this is a man I knew years past who was finally arrested for "flashing." He had flashed so often (he estimated thousands of times) and it became such a habit, that one day he was in his own bank cashing a check and he flashed the teller. Of course that is when he was arrested.

Habits, which are extensions of our interests performed over and over, begin with a subtle, often uncertain initial decision. If we find pleasure at all in what we have chosen to do, we do it again. In other words, we set a ball rolling down a certain road which has a steeper and steeper decline. Soon this practice becomes a habit, which eventually takes over our life, and can often become the sole purpose of our life. The habit that takes control of us we call our "Passion," and those who have such a passion are called "Fanatics," or "Fans" for short.

Greatness in many if not all fields comes from obsession. Those who are the best at what they choose to do are generally the ones who are the most dedicated, the most interested, and spend the most time and effort in whatever field they participate. And often this dedication and obsession is at the expense of a person's social life and health as well. These people, one could say, are off-balance.

This obsession and dedication, and the greatness that comes with it, does not always lead to fame and fortune as one might expect. It is rarely the one who is the innovator, the creator who becomes rich and famous; in fact these originators are often condemned as fools and die poor because of their dedication. Those who become rich and famous are the ones who jump on the bandwagon after it is going speedily down hill, pounding their chest and attracting attention to themselves. They are not interested in that which makes them rich and famous as much as they are in being rich and famous.

Of course this is not true of everyone. One exception that comes to mind is Elvis Presley. Although Elvis did not create as much of his type and style of music as is supposed, he did create an image. And just look at the number of people who immediately jumped on that bandwagon trying to be just as much like Elvis they could rather than risk failure developing a style of their own.

Nowadays it is not difficult to find something to direct our obsession towards. All around us there are people and things that want us to join their cause, and to obsess on their product, and become obsessed with their obsession. In fact, there are so many things that we can become obsessed with that becoming obsessed becomes rather difficult.

All these selfish drives have strong influences, not only from our own self, but from the World as well. Movies, TV, commercials, governments, and even schools encourage us to satisfy our lusts.

But in spite of all these distractions, obsessed we can become.

There was an article in the news I heard about where a couple were so obsessed with the computer that they ignored the cries of their infant child in the next room, who ultimately starved to death in a house full of food.

Obsession is not always a good thing.

But, it can be.

And eating is one of those good obsessions - if we are careful what we eat.

If we eat things to our own lusts, that is to satisfy ourselves, it will avail us nothing in the end because all our efforts will die with us.

If, however, we eat Spiritual food, that is study the Word to find out what God wants of us, and what we should be; then eating can be a very good obsession.

You and I know that we become what we eat. If we eat a lot of fat, we become fat. If we eat lean, we become lean.

We also know that if we dedicate ourselves to music, we become musical. If we throw ourselves into the field of sports, we become a sportsman.

If we spend our time and energies in studying witchcraft, we become a witch.
We are what we eat.

The World is full of things we can become. And, of course, most all of these have a very strong attraction to our carnal self, our old Adam nature.

But, those of you who are reading this, I assume are like me and do not want to remain the Carnal man or woman we are; rather we wish to become the Spiritual person the Bible tells us we must become in order to be adequate enough to be in the presence of God.

But, how do we do this? Did Jesus give us any advise as to how we should be as He is?

Yes, He did. And His words drove off almost every one of His disciples. Only the most dedicated, the most "Obsessed" with Jesus remained - and did ultimately "Become like Jesus."

What is it that Jesus said we must do to be like Him?

He said we must eat!

Because, what we eat; we become.

Here are His Words:

47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. 48I am that bread of life. 49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. 52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. 54Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. 57As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. 59These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. (John 6:)

Can you imagine what those people must have thought? But of course we know that Jesus wasn't referring to His actual flesh, but rather to partake of His Spiritual nature, which is the same as His Father's, which is the Holy Ghost who is to dwell in us all thereby making us part of His body - "Flesh of His flesh and bone of His bone" (Gen 2:23; Eph 5:25-32).

Did the twelve disciples understand what Jesus meant when He spoke of eating? Of course not. They, like you and I, were carnal. They heard the Words, but understood them not at all. And without the Spirit of Truth, there is no way any person can understand Jesus, nor any other part of the Bible.

The disciples could not feed themselves, nor anyone else until Pentecost. But they tried to understand. Here are a couple examples of their attempt;

13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. (Luke 9:)

The disciples couldn't feed the people, yet Jesus did. This was in the physical; but the same holds true in the Spiritual as well

27And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? 28The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? 30Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. 31In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. 32But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. 35Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. 36And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. 37And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. 38I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. (John 4:)

What was it that Jesus fed on? What was the "meat that you know not of?" It is to do the will of the Father. To proclaim the Word of God. To fulfill the mission He was sent to perform.

If the above was Jesus' meat, what do you suppose our meat is to be?

23For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord's death till he come. 27Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. 31For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. (1Cor 11:)

17To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. (Rev 2:)

17He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. (Rev 2:)

Whatever it is that you wish with all your heart to be, that is what you will become. You can become great here on this earthly plane, and be seen as nothing in the Heavenly realm. Or, you can see yourself as nothing here and now, and be lifted up to the Heavens.

19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Mat 5:)

16So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. (Mat 20:)

33Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. 34O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. 35A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. 36But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. 1The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side. 2And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. 3And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. 9Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. 10And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. 18Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. 19When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. 20But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. 22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. 23But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. (Mat 13:)

32Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. 34Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. 37He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. 40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 41He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward. 42And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. (Mat 10:)

25But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Mat 20:)

40And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (Mat 25:)

41And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 43For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. 45And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; 46Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. 47And he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, 48And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him. (Luke 19:)

13And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. (Luke 12:)

28Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. 29And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; 30That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. (Luke 22:)

38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? 39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. 40And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? 42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. 43And he took it, and did eat before them. 44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, (Luke 24:)

OVERCOMER

5He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, (Rev 3:5)

How often have you heard a sermon on Overcoming? How many times have you heard any reference to Overcoming? Do you think the word is in the Bible? Do you have any idea what it means?

I've seen the word, often, when I read the Book of Revelation. But since I hadn't heard much about it from the pulpit, I kind of skipped over those verses, regarding them as something not particularly important, or else something that must automatically apply to me because I was baptized as a Christian.

Though the word Overcome is one that I passed over; it was not one without power. Each time I saw the word, I felt that it somehow applied to me, and that I should give it due attention.

After all, it appears to me that Salvation and Eternal Life hinges on being an Overcomer according to Revelation.

But from many pulpits I am told, so it seems, that as long as I believe that Jesus died for my sins; and I was baptized, that my Salvation is assured, even if I backslide into hell itself.

Somehow that just doesn't feel right. Especially when I come across that word "Overcome."

So in order to determine if Overcome is a word worth worrying about, I decided to do a study on it.

To begin with, this word "Overcome" in Greek is also interpreted as "Prevail, Conquer, Get the Victory."

Below I have included all the verses that use the word interpreted as Overcome.

The first section contains those verses that apply directly to us in one form or another. Take a look at these and see what you think.

[ A note here. When studying something presented by anyone, assume the writer has an agenda, and is trying to prove a point. Assume the writer is only displaying verses and opinions that reinforce his belief or opinion. Also assume that explanations are intended to push you on a road which will end with you drawing only the conclusion the writer wants you to draw.

Cults are notorious for doing this. But they are not the only ones. Consider the Pharisees Jesus had to contend with.

Assume that I am doing the same. Check for yourself what I have presented to verify that I haven't twisted the words, or left out some words or verses, or that my commentary or order of presentation isn't divisive.

"Tradition," by definition is a custom or opinion that has been handed down from one person or generation to the next. Tradition has nothing to do with truth; although "Traditionalists" try hard to convince you that it does.

Evolution has become a tradition. So has one political candidate slamming another whether there is any truth to it or not. And now abortion and homosexuality has gone beyond mere tradition to becoming law.

When you stand before the Great White Throne, your faith and trust in Tradition will serve you not at all, which was well exemplified by Jesus' reaction to the Traditions of the Elders.

"Study to show yourself approved unto God." (2Tim 2:15) Paul advised Timothy. And that is my desire for these studies.]

11He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. (Rev 2:11)

26And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28And I will give him the morning star. 29He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 2:26)

4Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 5He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 6He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 3:5)

10Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 11Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. 12Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. 13He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 3:12)

5And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 6And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Rev 21:7)

1And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. 2And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. (Rev 15:2)

3For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? 4God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. (Rom 3:4)

The above Scriptures are universally applied to us as believers. And I think you will agree that there are great rewards prepared for those who Overcome, and dreadful punishment for those who do not, and for those who don't even try.

But what is an Overcomer? Is it all those who have been baptized? Or is there more?

Generally the churches and commentaries use this Scripture to explain what Overcome means:

4For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (1John 5:5)

It sure sounds like all we have to do is believe, and in fact, this Scripture doesn't even mention baptism.

But just to be on the safe side, let's look at some of the surrounding verses, shall we?

1Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (1John 5:5)

Look any different to you? The words "Keep Commandments" somehow slipped out of the Traditionalist's view. I wonder how that happened?

Here's a little more that John had to say on the subject:

14I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1John 2:13-14)

The Scriptures we looked at first were those spoken by Jesus, who surely must know what "Overcome" means. Let's see if there are any verses of Scripture that He applied to Himself as an Overcomer whereby we may better understand just what He expects of us:

Do ye now believe? 32Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. 33These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 3:21)

20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 3::21)

26And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: (Rev 2:26)

The picture I get is that Jesus expects us to Overcome in the same way that He Overcame. Did you get that picture?

Now the question is; how did Jesus Overcome the world???
[ Did you catch the devises I used? I put things in an order that is intended to lead you to the same conclusion I hold; and I asked you questions and made comments that make it appear as if the only logical conclusion is the one I (without saying what it is) hold.

That's why it is important for you to investigate on your own, having no pre-conceived notions, and assuming every conclusion that has been drawn is wrong. That doesn't mean you will find the right answer; but the understanding you will have will be your own.

Don't think I am suggesting you run off on your own and not seek advise or research what others have said regarding a subject. Far from it; check everything you can find and learn all you can from each. Just don't think that their opinion is correct because it is a popular one, or because that person is highly respected.

Different interpretations and different desires create a multitude of different denominations and cults. There are thousands of opinions floating around for every subject. And more than likely every one of them is wrong.]

For those of you who wish to research Overcome a little farther, I have included the remaining Scriptures that directly apply to Overcome, but do not necessarily effect our study:

21When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.
